‘Jacktown’ is Getting Connected, One Young Professional at a Time

So if you are in your 20’s or 30’s and you live anywhere near Lansing you probably know what Grand River Connection is.  If not see this previous post from last fall.  Well believe it or not, Jackson has it’s own up and coming young professionals group that has been holding regular meetings for almost a year now!  It is growing and is on a mission to connect young professionals all over Jackson, or even people from Ann Arbor, Detroit, or Lansing who come to the events.

The events are fun, and usually involve free grub from different hot spots all over jackson, so be sure to go check them out!

Get more than just a haircut.

Today’s post is a COOL idea from what sounds like a great place!  I have been told of this place by quite a few people, but it was when I was able to investigate on facebook today that I was sold on the coolness of this idea.  Today I am definitely suggesting you check out HIS Barber Shop over in Okemos.

Here is the description of the barber shop from their facebook groupsite.

“This is more than just a barber shop I intend with God’s help to remind people of his faithfulness to meet our needs even during what the world calls hard times, also this will give you a comfortable enviornment if you wish to discuss your walk with Christ and I will do the same and together we can all grow as children of God”

How cool is that?! Plus if you know a pastor or a priest he will cut his hair for free!  Talk about an act of faith to start a business and hold your neck out there like that!

So go get your haircut and have a conversation with the owner about the shop!  Sounds like a great idea to me!

The Music Makes the Masterpiece

Today’s referral I want to throw out there to anyone around Mid, West, or Southeast Michigan who may have a wedding, graduation party, or any other party coming up, that could use some great background music.

You want the perfect soundtrack to accompany your live event?  Then call A Mills Masterpiece Disc Jockey Services.

DJ Chris Mills will meet with you to go through the details of your event and help you pick out the perfect songs to match the different pieces and parts of your event.  You can choose your own special song or rely on his years of experience to pick out the perfect suggestion for you.

If you want to check out their humble home on the web you can go to but I would definitely email Chris at ChristopherAMills @

Full Gyms, Intimidating Instructors? No More I say.

Have you ever gone into your local gym or intermural sports center, and decided today was the day you were going to start working out, or start getting in shape?  Or you ordered some new-fangled gadget strait off the late night TV ads that told you it would do everything for you?

What happens when you go into the gym?  Usually it’s crowded, or there is some nut case there who looks like he’s been lifting weights since he was 4.  Perhaps there are people on all the machines, or the weight bench feels gross and sticky from the last fat slob who tried to bench his own weight.

If you are like me, you enjoy being active, but don’t have a ton of time to devote specifically to your fitness.  So you want to make sure you put very focused, effective time into your working out, so that you will achieve your fitness goals in the least possible amount of time.

So the question then is: what do you do?

I would suggest Fitness Together in Okemos.  Having a personal trainer walk you through your workout, and help make sure you are doing everything as effective as possible.  Their training studio is set up great for someone who wants to have a great workout, but doesn’t like it when people around could be watching them.  Each person has their own space they use, and there is a private shower/bath room to use when you are done.

It’s a great facility and you should definitely talk to Brian, the owner, if you have any questions about it.  You can find them online at the link below.

Why do YOU Choose to Stay?

February 1, 2010 Leave a comment

If you were asked ” Why do you chose to live in Michigan?”, what would you say?

Well I was sent an email that contained a link to the Pure Michigan campaign’s website where you could answer that exact question.

Here’s what I said.

When asked “Why did you stay?” from a friend, or co-worker asking me why I graduated from Michigan State University, and ended up living & working in Lansing Michigan my answer is simple.  “I love it here.”

To an outsider Michigan may seem like it is stacked wall to wall with abandoned factories, run down people, and a few farm fields.  I see incredible opportunity.  I see a laundry list of experiences we can have.  All someone needs to do is watch one of the Pure Michigan ads to see beautiful places to travel to.

Not to mention the people in this state.  When I interact with people every day around the greater Lansing community I hear values of business people just wanting to help, professors eager to teach and develop students, young professionals eager to launch into new ideas and fields, and many other great types of people eager to serve.  This state has a backbone to it.  A Resolve that will not break.

I look forward to a time when I can raise my family here in Michigan.  A time when I can take them to see the great lakes.  When we can camp ‘up north’.  When I can walk through a safe community that I am glad to call home.

It’s those values, those natural resources and the experiences that are available all around us that drew me to stay.  In my humble opinion, it would have been foolish for me to go anywhere else.

Simple to use, beautiful to see, a must have philosophy for the iPhone

December 7, 2009 1 comment

Happy Monday morning everyone!  I hope your week is off to a productive, and enjoyable start!

Today I want to highlight what I think is one of the coolest small businesses I know of.  The Business is called Bickbot.  They are an iPhone application developer.  Their whole way of looking at designing applications for iPhone users is to just keep everything very, very simple so that the user can immediately understand how to use, and benefit from the application.  Then instead of making it plain and boring looking, they really get the creative juices flowing, and design very elegant, visually enjoyable designs to go onto the application.  Plus they are from Metro-Detroit which makes them even cooler by default.  It IS possible to still be alive and well in Detroit.  Take that national media!

Bick bot's Strokes iPhone App

Bickbot's Strokes iPhone App

They are like the Cadillac of iPhone app developers.  I have had the pleasure of seeing one of their most popular applications, Strokes, keep my score in a round of golf before, and instead of just being a boring score card and a stroke counter, you get a rich wood finish and what looks like leather trim.  It really is a good looking app.

Happy Thanksgiving! I hope you have plenty to be thankful for!

November 26, 2009 Leave a comment

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!  I am thankful for alot of things in my life.  My health, my career, my family, my friends, the fact that I have a roof over my head, and plenty to eat, etc etc. etc.  The one thing I am most thankful for though, is my faith.  When any other part of life is out of whack, or out of sync, my faith is the one constant that I can turn to and know it hasn’t changed.   It’s like the speed of light.  It is the Constant in my life.

So, my referral (if you can call it that) for today is just to say that Riverview Church in Holt, MI is awesome.  Whether you are a Christian, or just someone who wants to explore and see what the whole Jesus thing is about, come visit.  You will get to have a cup of coffee, and hear some great music, and some very edutainspiring (educating, entertaining, inspiring) pastors will speak from their hearts, and more importantly from The Bible.  It’s a great place, a great community of people, and some of the most generous, hard working, loving people I’ve ever met.

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving everyone!  May you have many parts of your life to be extremely thankful for!
