Spring is here. Play Ball!

Just wanted to do a quick post to share this great video of Ernie Harwell describing the beauty of Baseball.

How do you feel heading into Major League Baseball’s Opening Day?

p.s.  Go Tigers! Go Detroit!

Imported from Detroit = Genius

Genius.  That is what I thought when i first saw this ad during the superbowl.

Imported from Detroit

Imported from Detroit

That was, after i sat back down and stopped clapping.  I was even wearing my Detroit Lions jersey that day too.

Now, to be fair and open about it, I’m totally biased.  I was born in Detroit.  I recognized most of the landmarks they show in the commercial.   So personally it pulled on my heartstrings to see all of those different spots in the commercial.

As for the layout of the whole thing it starts with a gritty voice, a grammaticality incorrect statement of  “I got a question for ya” and proceeds to conjur up images of hell and fire and a city that survives the forge like a tempered piece of glowing metal.  Message number one:  we survived.

Then it addresses the image the city has thanks to the media.  Even making a statement about how much bad press the city gets from writers “who’ve never even been here”.   Message number two: you aren’t here, you don’t know.

Then the narrator compares Detroit to other cities like New York, Las Vegas, or even the emerald city from the wizard of oz.   Saying Detroit is an American city, “we’re from America” connects to the sense of patriotism that everyone has in their minds.  There are 4 different shots in the commercial where you can see american flags waving.  It also hits the minds of those who always say that they will only buy an american car.  Message number three: we are up there with any other city in the country.

Then, and only then after standing up boldly for the city of Detroit does the commercial shift for it’s second half toward the car a little.  Incorporating more of the cities proud landmarks like the fox theater.  Then add in the gospel choir to represent the soul and culture the city has, as well as Eminem to show someone who has succeeded coming from a rough part of the city.  He also bridges a connection between the old generation spoken of at the beginning of the commercial and the upcoming younger generation that want to see the city prosper.   If you have a heart for Detroit, or the American Auto Industry, or even for the midwest in general I have to imagine that you walk away from that two minute mini-documentary of an ad with a sense that Detroit will definitely stand tall once again.

What do you think?

‘Jacktown’ is Getting Connected, One Young Professional at a Time

So if you are in your 20’s or 30’s and you live anywhere near Lansing you probably know what Grand River Connection is.  If not see this previous post from last fall.  Well believe it or not, Jackson has it’s own up and coming young professionals group that has been holding regular meetings for almost a year now!  It is growing and is on a mission to connect young professionals all over Jackson, or even people from Ann Arbor, Detroit, or Lansing who come to the events.

The events are fun, and usually involve free grub from different hot spots all over jackson, so be sure to go check them out!

Simple to use, beautiful to see, a must have philosophy for the iPhone

Happy Monday morning everyone!  I hope your week is off to a productive, and enjoyable start!

Today I want to highlight what I think is one of the coolest small businesses I know of.  The Business is called Bickbot.  They are an iPhone application developer.  Their whole way of looking at designing applications for iPhone users is to just keep everything very, very simple so that the user can immediately understand how to use, and benefit from the application.  Then instead of making it plain and boring looking, they really get the creative juices flowing, and design very elegant, visually enjoyable designs to go onto the application.  Plus they are from Metro-Detroit which makes them even cooler by default.  It IS possible to still be alive and well in Detroit.  Take that national media!

They are like the Cadillac of iPhone app developers.  I have had the pleasure of seeing one of their most popular applications, Strokes, keep my score in a round of golf before, and instead of just being a boring score card and a stroke counter, you get a rich wood finish and what looks like leather trim.  It really is a good looking app.

Happy Thanksgiving! I hope you have plenty to be thankful for!

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!  I am thankful for alot of things in my life.  My health, my career, my family, my friends, the fact that I have a roof over my head, and plenty to eat, etc etc. etc.  The one thing I am most thankful for though, is my faith.  When any other part of life is out of whack, or out of sync, my faith is the one constant that I can turn to and know it hasn’t changed.   It’s like the speed of light.  It is the Constant in my life.

So, my referral (if you can call it that) for today is just to say that Riverview Church in Holt, MI is awesome.  Whether you are a Christian, or just someone who wants to explore and see what the whole Jesus thing is about, come visit.  You will get to have a cup of coffee, and hear some great music, and some very edutainspiring (educating, entertaining, inspiring) pastors will speak from their hearts, and more importantly from The Bible.  It’s a great place, a great community of people, and some of the most generous, hard working, loving people I’ve ever met.
